About The American Fertility Association
The AFA is a national, non-profit organization serving the United States through its national office in New York City, and is a leader in providing men and women, health care professionals, public officials and the media, both nationally and internationally, with information about infertility treatments, reproductive and sexual health and family building options including adoption and third-party solutions.
The AFA has advised healthcare professionals and related industry and legislative bodies on fertility issues. The AFA has been invited as a patient representative to give comments to the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Conference of State Legislators and the President’s Council on Bioethics, where we testified in favor of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). The AFA’s “Empty Stroller” campaign and continued advocacy were instrumental in achieving the passage of the New York State Mandate in 2002 requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of certain diagnosis and treatments.
The AFA has built solid strategic global alliances as the Founding Partner and coordinator of WorldFAM, an education vehicle used by 36 international patient advocacy groups in 22 countries. The AFA has been involved in the fight for social and legislative change around reproductive issues, including advocating for stem cell research and the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender persons to create families, adopt children, and form lasting and legally recognized relationships.
Most recently, The AFA has committed to educating people as early as possible about sexual and reproductive health and the link between STDs and infertility, and a curriculum is in development.
Over 40,000 individuals are members of The AFA, and nearly 500 new members join each month, clear proof of the critical need for the education, support, advocacy and research that The AFA provides.
The AFA offers a range of services - all free to consumers -from a support line to extensive online resources designed to help individuals and couples experiencing infertility gather information about options, medical treatments, coping techniques and legal and insurance issues.
The AFA’s other online services include a professional health care directory, monthly newsletter, a professional newsletter, a newsletter supporting those just beginning their journey towards parenthood, message boards, a weekly chat series and a daily blog coming in late June. The AFA also prints a twice-yearly publication called Impact, covering all aspects of fertility, reproductive and sexual health and policy related issues.
The American Fertility Association (The AFA) was founded in 1999 under the leadership of Pamela Madsen, the Founding Executive Director, to support people trying to conceive; transform the lives of individuals and couples faced with reproductive difficulties; and raise awareness around sexual and reproductive health and wellness.
